Celebrating major milestones of TIFR
December 17-18, 2022
The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research came into existence on June 1, 1945, more than 75 years ago. It was to be an Indian response to the need of acquiring scientific excellence and retaining the best minds within the country and working in an environment that would be as good as any in the world, both intellectually and in terms of infrastructure.
To achieve this Dr. Homi Bhabha, with strong support from Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, founded TIFR on the campus of the Indian Institute of Science Campus, Bengaluru. With the growing activities of the Institute, it soon moved to Kenilworth, Mumbai, and later on to the Old Yatch Club. In 1954, the foundation stone of TIFR was laid in Navy Nagar and the buildings were formally inaugurated in 1962.
Apart from building an infrastructure that remains a source of envy even today, Dr. Bhabha also started the practice of ensuring that TIFR scientists remain in touch with their colleagues in other parts of the world, and many were trained abroad and encouraged to return and build the infrastructure here.
As we look ahead to our future, it is good to ponder on how we got where we are today, and look at how some of our best achievements were arrived at. These are stories of grit, determination, imagination, and perseverance that have made TIFR one of the important institutions in the world of science and technology.
We propose to hold a 2-day meeting titled Landmarks@TIFR where we take a stock of how our most outstanding landmarks were reached and our vision for the future.
